Hypervolt is making EV charging more efficient and environmentally friendly — beginning today.
Introducing Ultra Mode: a new mode for Hypervolt users that lets you earn money, support the grid, and charge intelligently, with zero extra effort. Ultra Mode is an add-on to your existing energy supply tariff and allows you to take advantage of new opportunities to support the electricity grid and earn while you charge. Ultra Mode is optional and will exist alongside the modes & functionality you know and love.
Through Ultra Mode, your Hypervolt charger enables you to participate in grid support and smart charging initiatives, while helping you earn financial rewards, cut costs and reduce emissions.
🔌 What Is Ultra Mode?
Ultra Mode is a new mode in the Hypervolt app that enables your Hypervolt charger to:
- Optimise charging to off-peak hours when electricity is greener and cheaper
- Reward you financially for participating in grid flexibility and smart charging schemes
It’s entirely hands-off. You're in control at all times. Just tell us how much you need, when you need it by and you'll earn money while doing so. Your Hypervolt will carry out all the heavy lifting for you. Simple earn while you charge.
Ultra Mode is designed to help customers who may not be eligible for mainstream smart tariffs such as Octopus Intelligent Go, Ovo Charge Anytime and others.
🔍 A Two-Part Rollout: Grid Support Now, Smart Charging Soon
Ultra Mode is being rolled out in two stages — each designed to bring you more benefits as the system evolves.
🔹 Phase 1: Grid Support Functionality
We’ve entered the pre-launch phase of Ultra Mode with a focus on grid support. This includes:
- A 30-minute test to validate your charger’s ability to reduce consumption when required — such as during a UK grid emergency.
- Participation in these trials helps confirm eligibility for monthly cash rewards when Ultra Mode grid support becomes fully active.
- These events are endorsed by the UK government and grid operators like the National Grid, and managed through our partnerships with energy companies and energy aggregators
You may notice very brief pauses in charging during these events — but rest assured, you’ll be notified 24 hrs in advance and always have the option to opt out of each test.
This grid support model aligns with the EV Smart Charging Regulations 2021 enabling you to override a grid support initiative and plays a key role in supporting the UK’s transition to clean transport and energy. You can opt-out at any time by contacting our support team on support@hypervolt.co.uk or disabling grid support in the app when it launches.
🔹 Phase 2: Ultra Mode Smart Charging
Starting this September, you’ll be able to opt in to full Ultra Mode smart charging, which includes:
- Intelligent charging schedules that adapt to electricity prices and carbon intensity
- Earning rewards for charging when there’s excess renewable energy
- Seamless integration into your daily routine
Of course, if you prefer, you can continue to use the Hypervolt modes you know and love instead of Ultra Mode — Eco Mode, Super Eco Mode, or Boost Mode — with no changes to your setup.
💸 Why This Matters (and Pays)
🌞 In Summer: Charging Supports Renewables
During sunny and windy months, the UK grid often produces more clean energy than it can use. Ultra Mode taps into that surplus, automatically charging your car when clean energy is most available — while you earn rewards.
❄️ In Winter: Pausing Prevents Carbon Peaks
In colder months, Ultra Mode may briefly pause your charging during peak demand hours to ease pressure on the grid and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel backup generators. You’ll earn rewards for every contribution.
💷 How do I get paid?
Depending on your participation and location, rewards will vary depending on grid operator rules, your geography and how often you plug your car in. Here's how it works:
- Via our partnerships with energy providers and energy aggregators, we partner with the UK’s Electricity System Operator (ESO) and regional Distribution System Operators (DSOs).
- When a flexibility event is triggered, your charger is automatically adjusted temporarily
- Your preferences are always respected, and earnings are tracked in the app.

🚀 Getting Started with Ultra Mode Smart Charging Is Easy
Smart charging requires you to activate your preferences and consent in the app. To get started simply:
- Update to the latest Hypervolt app in the app store
- Tap “Get Started” under Ultra Mode to complete the set-up flow
- Verify your address or MPAN in-app to check eligibility
- Complete your charging preferences such as start time, finish time, amount of battery to add hit finish
- Done — start earning while charging
🛡️ Am I eligible?
In order to be eligible you must meet the below criteria. Our terms and privacy policy that support Ultra Mode can be found on our main website in the footer.
- Located in Great Britain
- Not participating in a smart tariff such as Octopus Intelligent Go, Ovo Charge Anytime and others.
🛡️ You Stay in Control
- 🔋 No energy is ever pulled from your EV battery
- 🚗 No impact on your car’s battery health or range
- 🔧 You can override schedules or disable Ultra Mode anytime in the app
- ✅ Ultra Mode Smart Charging is opt-in only. Only you can set-up your preferences and activate this in the app.
