See the sun in every charge: introducing Solar Insights

Written by Hypervolt Engineering | Jul 8, 2026 11:47:29 AM

Welcome to Solar Insights.

The sun already powers your home. Now you can see it power your drive — and watch your sunniest charges cost you next to nothing.

Solar Insights is now in beta. From this release, every charging session in the Hypervolt app splits into two numbers: the free sunshine you generated on your own roof, and the grid you topped up with. The solar share costs you nothing — and now you can see exactly how much of your driving runs on it.

This one's from the engineering side of the house. Here's what we built, why a kilowatt isn't just a kilowatt, and how it works without a single new wire.

A kilowatt isn't just a kilowatt

Until now, energy from the grid and energy from your own roof looked identical in your app. They're not. One costs you money; the other was already yours. Solar Insights tells them apart — and finally shows you how much of your driving runs on sunshine.

The idea is simple, but the honesty matters. Your charger already logs every session, and your solar generation was linked when it was fitted. We line those two data streams up second by second, allocate the sunshine you were producing to the car first, and only count the shortfall as grid. What's left is a genuine split — not an estimate bolted on after the fact.

Twenty of twenty-two, free

Here's a week from a test home. Twenty-two kilowatt-hours went into the car; twenty of them came straight off the roof. The bill for the whole week was twenty pence.

Gold is sunshine, green is grid. The taller the gold, the smaller the bill. That lone green bar? A charge that ran entirely on the grid — a cloudy evening top-up.

Two colours. One honest number.

From the Hypervolt app

Day view · 8 JunOne day, charge by charge — each session filling with solar and capped with grid.
Week view · Last weekSeven days totalled — cost, energy charged, and how much came free from the sun.

Solar, counted at zero

See how many kilowatts of each charge came straight from your own panels — costed at £0, because they cost you nothing.

Grid, made honest

Your Total Cost reflects exactly what you drew from the grid, and only that. No phantom charges for energy you generated yourself.

The split, session by session

In the daily view, each charge fills with gold and caps with green — the whole day's charging, told at a glance.

Zoom out to a week

Move from a single session to a whole week and watch your solar share climb — proof of a setup you already paid for, working.

The cheapest, cleanest energy you'll ever use is the energy you make yourself.

You fitted solar to power your home. Now you can watch it power your drive — and stop paying grid rates for sunshine you generated. Charge when the sun is high, and lean on the grid only when you have to.

One step to sunlight

If you're running a Hypervolt Home 3 or Home 3 Pro with solar, there's nothing to install and nothing to wire. Your charger already logs every session, and your solar was linked when it was fitted. All that's left is to opt into the beta — then open Energy Usage and charge as normal.

No update. No new hardware. No tariff to switch.

Home and Home 3 Pro onlyThis feature is available for our Home 3 and Home 3 Pro devices only. Right now we don't have a roadmap for older device generations to get this feature.
Early betaSolar Insights is still in beta, so you may run into the occasional bug or rough edge as we polish it.
From 2026Sessions are split using your charging data from the start of 2026 onward — anything before that stays as it was.

Good to know

  • Hypervolt Home 3 or Home 3 Pro required. Solar Insights runs on our latest chargers — earlier models don't support the feature yet.
  • Solar required. It's for homes with their own solar generation and a compatible setup.
  • Numbers may refine. As we tune the model your breakdowns only get sharper. We'll flag any meaningful changes.
  • We want your feedback. Tell us what's clear, what isn't, and what you'd love to see next. You're shaping the release.
  • Nothing else changes. Eco, Super Eco, Boost and Ultra Mode all work exactly as before.

Solar Insights is currently in beta and available to eligible Hypervolt customers with solar generation. Figures shown throughout are illustrative and may evolve during the beta period.
